Taming Of The Shrew Analysis Essays - The Taming Of The Shrew
Taming Of The Shrew Analysis The Taming of the Shrew: Act IV Scene I Grumio arrives at Petruchio's house after accompanying Petruchio and Kate on a long journey from Padua. Grumio affirms the fact that the servants are well prepared for the new couple's arrival. He tells Curtis, another servant to Petruchio, of an incident that occurred on the trip. Katherina's horse had thrown on her off and then remained on top of her. Petruchio's reaction was not to assist Katherina, but to strike Grumio for letting the horse fall. Grumio also explains how Kate actually tried to stop Petruchio's physical attack on Grumio. Here, we can plainly see the beginning of ?the taming? of Katherina, the shrew. When the couple arrives at the house, Petruchio demonstates anger toward Grumio for not having someone at the door to welcome them. The two are served food and drink, but Petruchio acts like a tyrant by complaining that the meat is overcooked. He also yells at a servant for accidentally spilling water. Once again, Kate interjects that the meat was cooked fine and the water was spilled accidentally and the servant should not be punished. Petruchio refuses to eat and decides that they should fast for the evening and he shows Kate to her room. Bibliography Riverside Shakespeare Shakespeare Essays

Standard State Conditions of Temperature and Pressure
Standard State Conditions of Temperature and Pressure Values of thermodynamic quantities are commonly expressed for standard state conditions, so it is a good idea to understand what the standard state conditions are. A superscript circle is used to denote a thermodynamic quantity that is under standard state conditions: ÃâH ÃâHà °ÃâS ÃâSà °ÃâG ÃâGà ° Standard State Conditions Certain assumptions apply to standard state conditions. Standard temperature and pressure commonly is abbreviated as STP. The standard state temperature is 25à °C (298 K). It is possible to calculate standard state values for other temperatures. All liquids are pure. The concentration of all solutions is 1 M (1 molar). All gases are pure. All gases are at 1 atm pressure. The energy of formation of an element in its normal state is defined as zero. A Review of Software Tools for Quantitative Data Analysis
A Review of Software Tools for Quantitative Data Analysis If youre aà sociology student or budding social scientist and have started to work with quantitative (statistical) data, analytic software will be very useful to you. These programs force researchers to organize and clean her data and offer pre-programmed commands that allow everything from very basic to quite advanced forms of statistical analysis. They even offer useful visualizations that will be useful as you seek to interpret your data, and that you may wish to use when presenting it to others. There are many programs on the market, but unfortunately, they are quite expensive to purchase. The good news for students and faculty is that most universities have licenses for at least one program which students and professors can use. In addition, most programs offer a free, pared-down version of the full software package which will often suffice. Heres a review of the three main programs that quantitative social scientists use. Statistical Package forSocial Science (SPSS) SPSS is the most popular quantitative analysis software program used by social scientists. Made and sold by IBM, it is comprehensive, flexible, and can be used with almost any type of data file. However, its especially useful for analyzing large-scale survey data. It can be used to generate tabulated reports, charts, and plots of distributions and trends, as well as generate descriptive statistics such as means, medians, modes and frequencies in addition to more complex statistical analyses like regression models. SPSS provides a user interface that makes it easy and intuitive for all levels of users. With menus and dialogue boxes, you can perform analyses without having to write command syntax, like in other programs. It is also simple and easy to enter and edit data directly into the program. There are a few drawbacks, however, which might not make it the best program for some researchers. For example, there is a limit on the number of cases you can analyze. It is also difficult to account for weights, strata and group effects with SPSS. STATA STATA is an interactive data analysis program that runs on a variety of platforms. It can be used for both simple and complex statistical analyses. STATA uses a point-and-click interface as well as command syntax, which makes it easy to use. STATA also make it simple to generate graphs and plots of data and results. Analysis in STATA is centered around four windows: the command window, review window, result window and variable window. Analysis commands are entered into the command window and the review window records those commands. The variables window lists the variables that are available in the current data set along with the variable labels, and the results appear in the results window. SAS SAS, short for Statistical Analysis System, is also used by many businesses; in addition to statistical analysis, it also allows programmers to perform report writing, graphics, business planning, forecasting, quality improvement, project management and more. SAS is a great program for the intermediate and advanced user because it is very powerful; it can be used with extremely large datasets and can perform complex and advanced analyses. SAS is good for analyses that require you to take into account weights, strata or groups. Unlike SPSS and STATA, SAS is run largely by programming syntax rather than point-and-click menus, so some knowledge of the programming language is required.

Video games are the latest expression of the 'control society' Essay
Video games are the latest expression of the 'control society' (Deleuze 1992) Discuss this claim in relation to ideas of con - Essay Example The children who learn a sort of behaviour from these video games usually affect their own health, their social life and start lacking in physical activity games (Anderson & Bushman, 2001). This essay has explained the Deleuzeââ¬â¢s concept of controlled society and how the video games can be, or, are being used in control and improvising of the control society. Evolution of Video Games Video Games have evolved over the past two decades. There was once a time when 16-bit and 32-bit gaming consoles were extremely popular around the world. These games were usually two-dimensional in nature and were relatively clean in terms of violence, nudity, expletives and sexual content (Gottfried, 2005). However, gaming has evolved rapidly with the passage of time and today, three- dimensional games are widely available. These games boast the most detailed and crisp high definition graphics and an addictive game play. Unfortunately, with advances in gaming technology, the level of inappropriate and unsuitable content in games has also increased to an alarming level (Gottfried, 2005). Advancements in Technology and the modern emergence of video games With the rapid growth and development of the society, the modernization of the technology is an important aspect that cannot be neglected. While the advancements continue to pave their path through the society, the concept of a control society, in terms of expressions, is an important phenomenon that has been introduced by Deleuze. The worldââ¬â¢s leading producers of electronic games do their best to ensure that they stamp their game CDs with a prominent ESRB rating that gives the potential purchaser of the CD a general idea of the type of content that they might stumble across in the game. The ESRB rating is ideally meant to discourage younger audiences from purchasing games that have an 18+ or similar rating (Vorderer& Bryant, 2012). But is this enough to stop ardent gaming enthusiasts from playing their favourite games? No, it isnââ¬â¢t. Younger addicts of games are regularly exposed to inappropriate content as they are unable to control the strong urge to play the latest games and this usually means that they shun ESRB ratings. The games being developed these days are rich in graphical content and it is common for gamers to control a gung-ho protagonist and go on a killing spree as they match around the city shooting enemies in the head and spilling their blood all over the place (Vorderer& Bryant, 2012). Apart from this, there are also games where blade-swinging heroes swing their swords to cut off limbs and chop off heads. Such content is hardly considered to be appropriate for children under the age of 18. An example taken here is of ââ¬Å"Herculesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"mortal combatâ⬠. Unfortunately these games are the most common among younger children who have been addicted to them. Concept of Improvisation In testing and complex circumstances performing authorities improvise with a pa rticular deciding objective to pass on request from the holds of turmoil. Highsmith (2002) recommends this as a "choric" practice. Undoubtedly, in a gathering condition, there may be battling depictions for encounters, occasions and issues, however legitimately, translations help accord, that is, equifinality. This has been noted to happen all around crises where gifted people and conglomerations improvise life-sparing happens out of disarray. Deleuzeââ¬â¢

Products of Native American Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Products of Native American Culture - Essay Example The text which is used as a product of Native American culture is one which shows a different identity that belongs to America and which once was the main association with the United States, as opposed to the changes which occurred after the land was conquered by the American government. Text as a Product of Native American Culture The text that is a part of culture and history is first defined as a product of Native American culture. The different types of text are able to describe the culture, history, family and the lifestyle that was a part of a given time frame. This traced the history of the Native Americans back into the ancient ways of living while showing how the dominant culture in America was lost through the war. The defining of these elements make the text as a main product of Native American culture, specifically because it is able to define and describe different parts of the culture as well as provide examples that have caused the religious, ceremonial, cultural and h istorical aspects to be engrained with those who are a part of the Native American tradition. When reading the text, there is the ability to understand the entire society. The intertwining of traditions, ranging from the societal hierarchy to the concepts of religion are in each of the text, making it all a significant basis to understanding the history, beliefs and lifestyles of Native Americans. An example of the text as a part of Native American culture is defined with ââ¬Å"Black Elk Speaks.â⬠This particular text is important in defining the ceremonies and cultures of the Sioux while combining this with the historical events taking place when America began to attack the Native Americans. Descriptions such as The Dog Vision, Heyoka Ceremony and the Powers of the Bison and Elk are able to describe elements of the culture and how this related to the changes in America from the past of Native Americans. ââ¬Å"Under the tree that never bloomed I stood and cried because it had withered away. With tears on my face I asked the Great Spirit to give it life and leaves and singing birds, as in my visionâ⬠(Neihardt, 193). This is one of several examples that show the intertwining of cultures in the text. The product comes from the connection to nature, prayers that are a part of the practice of Native Americans, and as read through the ââ¬Å"Great Spiritâ⬠and which associates with the context of the time. The particular culture is also defined as the narrator is describing the attacks of the Native Americans and how the family is lost because of the American attacks, showing how the culture known is lost because of the historical events taking place at the time. Another representation which shows the text as the Native American culture is through ââ¬Å"Ceremonyâ⬠by Leslie Silko. Similar to ââ¬Å"Black Elk Speaks,â⬠this book is able to combine the elements of the Native American culture with religion, ceremony and the beliefs that are upheld through generations. However, there is also an understanding of how this has changed because of the divisions which occurred in America over time. ââ¬Å"An old sensitivity had descended in her, surviving thousands of years from the oldest times, when the people shared a single clan name and they told each other who they wereâ⬠¦

The Scarlet Letter Essay -- Literary Analysis, Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, portrays the adversities faced by Hester Prynne and Reverend Dimmesdale, and their struggles to overcome their sins of adultery. Hawthorne depicts the celestial Dimmesdale as a troubled minister with an uneasy conscience who struggles to cope with his wrongdoings. Dimmesdale is torn between whether to publically confess his wrongdoing with Hester and let the merciless Puritans decide his fate, or keep his secret hidden and let the guilt derived from his actions, along with the devil in Roger Chillingworth, destroy him both mentally and physically. Being divided between his love for Hester and his Puritan ideals, Dimmesdaleââ¬â¢s advancement towards making amends for his sin of adultery is manifested in the three scaffold scenes throughout the novel. The first scaffold scene depicts Hesterââ¬â¢s public humiliation of her sin, and Dimmesdaleââ¬â¢s lack of courage and troubled soul. In the first scaffold scene, Dimmesdale acts as Hesterââ¬â¢s deceptive accuser, letting her stand alone on the scaffold for three hours while being ridiculed by the townspeople for an act they both committed. Dimmesdale charges Hester ââ¬Å"to speak out the name of thy fellow-sinner and fellow-sufferer. Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for himâ⬠(Hawthorne 64). By directly speaking to Hester, Dimmesdale wants Hester to reveal his sin to the townspeople of Boston. Dimmesdale does not want Hester to pity him, and take all the blame for their wrongdoing because he does not want to live a sinful life full of hidden sin and guilt. Although Dimmesdale wants Hester to reveal his secret, he is relieved when Hester says ââ¬Å"I will not speak...And my child must seek a heavenly Father; she shall never know an earthly ... ... Dimmesdale, a minister with a troubled soul, regrets his actions and makes amends for his sin, allowing him to finally be free from guilt and suffering. The scaffold, a place of public shame and humiliation, symbolizes Dimmesdaleââ¬â¢s progression towards making amends for his actions, and obtaining salvation. Dimmesdale goes from being a religious and deceitful minister in the first scaffold scene to a humble and lowly individual by the end of the third scaffold scene, freeing himself from the guilt that has caused so much havoc on his life. Dimmesdaleââ¬â¢s sin, which is manifested throughout the three scaffold scenes, symbolizes the major theme of the Scarlet Letter, which states that hidden sin will ultimately kill an individual if left unconfessed, and that the only way to achieve salvation is by publicly confessing oneââ¬â¢s actions and making atonement with God.
